RE: Leveling and stabilizing with slideout question

i go a 1/4 to 1/2 bubble hi on the slide side and usually comes out pretty good. i camp alot in sandy soil so lately i have been putting down a 2x6x18 board 1st which also seems to help. usually by the next morning i am tightening the non slide jacks. asked why once b4 and have come to the conclusion that's it's a combo of the slide side settleing and think once the tires cool off they may raise up slightly to their normal profile causing the jacks to be loose. noticed this on previous TT's w/o slides also.

RE: myth busted

looked up the law here in Illinois. rather long to post, but boils down to that if you are running during sunset to sunrise they must be working. statute gives the different sizes of trailer and what's required-even to the distance they are required to be visible. just know that on my TT, if it's there it's going to work or be fixed. wife mentioned that with them out it would be possible for someone-during poor visibility-to turn into the TT. BOSS agrees-they will be in working order :)

RE: Dish network in an RV?

I bought a portable dish and tripod on Ebay for $90. We just unhook the box and take it with us. Hook it up where you go, enter the zip code for the area, set the dish and voila, you have TV. We have never notified them or signed anything and have never had a problem. I even called them from the Keys once for tech support and they never said a thing. :B i was one of those that was very up front with DISH. told em i wanted a receiver for the TT and even had em drop a line at the corner of the garage for the TT when at home. things were great for a yr or so, till i got a call they wanted to verify/test the receivers. to do this they need to be plugged to a phone line. being the middle of winter at the time and the TT all locked up tight i explained that all but 1 box could be tested, that it was out in the TT. things got real quiet on her side for a moment and then she told me i would have to have 2 accounts. i had the top pkg and dish wanted me to pay twice to have it in the TT. things warmed up a little at this point and i now have direct. i told direct exactly what i wanted to do(like i did with DISH) and explained the problems i had with dish. was basically told that as long as the billing address was the same for all receivers, there was no problem. also got the line drop at the garage and a good deal on a used dish. actually have a spare or 2 now since i had the 3LNB installed at the time(so i was all ready for HD) but now they have 5 LNB's for HD so they put in the new one(free) and let me keep the old one(free) setup for me is easy, i have it mounted on a radio shack tripod and just loosen the ele nuts, check the app. direction, hook up the sat finder(be careful, it finds ALL of them), kinda point in the general direction and raise/lower the dish, turn the tripod a few degreesand start again. doing it this way i can usually find the sat in 5 to 15 min providing i have a clear sky. BIL/SIL usually come with us and he hasn't bothered to set his up in i couldn't tell ya how long. my dish has 4 hook ups so he just makes sure he has plenty of cable and hooks up to me. Yep works on any satellite tv system. chi6488 is correct; you are just paying for the signal and it doesn't matter where you receive it this is correct cept for 'local' stations. both companies use what's called a spot beam and only covers the local area. can get pretty far from home and still get it but a couple of hundred miles and forget it (ie, no local chicago stations in south dakato)

RE: Stupid Mistake

don't know if it's fixable or not-the shop should be able to tell. i must have been one of the lucky ones, lost mine on my 1st TT (definatly not fixable) the insurance co had me get the dealer(camping world) fax them an estimate of the awning and cost to install it then cut me a check. since then my awning goes out tight, tilted, 2 sets of de-flappers and spring loaded tie down straps that keep 'unroll' tension on the roller tube. if the weather is not nice i keep an eye on it and if in doubt, it comes in. i have seen alot of trashed awnings over the yrs and in my opinion alot of it could be prevented by rolling them out taught and keeping a healthy tilt on them. i think that after you lose one, you become very respectful of mother nature and what she can do to your toys in the blink of an eye.

RE: myth busted

Are you talking about the clearance lights across the top? I don't think ANY of mine work, and I've never bothered to look. Do they serve a purpose? Should I put some on my car? I'm sorry that your weekend of camping was rainy. I think most RVers are fairly consciensous (I'm sorry, I can't spell that word), but I don't think it has much to do with their clearance lights, FWIW. personally i was more concerned about his non working stop lights. in dark and/or rainy weather i want all my lights to be working. when a driver behind you sees those from a distance he should be able to guess you may be fairly large and may or may not be doing the speed limit(especially up hills) Personally anything that will help other drivers know i'm there is worth it. I don't know the legalities of them but the cost of a bulb or 2 definatly out weighs the cost of a ticket-both in time and cash.

RE: Microwave kicks out breaker

1st question is which breaked is it popping? the main in the TT, the one for the micro and/or air, or the one outside on the post. are the micro and air on their own circuit? does this happen everywhere or only at certain CG's? there are several fixes, depending how much it bothers you and how much $$ you are MAYBE willing to spend. the easiest is mentioned above-don't use 2 power hogs at the same time. the line monitor is a good idea. and depending on if they are on their own circuit or not(and which breaker is popping), you could check the power rateing on the micro and buy a cheaper, less powerful one, or use a lower power setting on the micro if it has that feature. had kinda a similar porblem with an inverter in a conversion van. coffee pot i tried to run would pop it every time. went to the dollar general and ended up opening up several boxes to find a coffee pot that was low enough to run on the power i had.

myth busted

I have always thought of myself and my fellow RV'ers as a cut above the average driver. I thought we were more consciencious of our equiptment and maintance of it. Well, yesterday I had this myth 'busted'. I was comming home from a rainy week end of camping at one of the local state parks and pulled out behind a fellow camper. It was an older jayco(nothing wrong there) but definatly was in need of some maintnence. Of the 5 running lights across the top, 2 were working and he had 1 very dim stop light that when he used his brake, it went out completely. As he was turning into a gas station i saw the TV which was a late model silverado that looked fine. hopefully he caught the lights out-atleast the stop lights and was able to fix em befor he continued on his way. Hope he made it home alright. I don't know about every one else here, but I myself do a walk around checking the lights, hitch/sway control, tires and anything that may not look right every time befor my unit moves. this includes rest stops, fuel stops and over night stops. From my reading here i kinda got the impression that this was pretty much the norm-guess not. All i can say is take the extra 2 minutes and do a walk around to make sure things are as they should be. I know i have had light issues myself and usually it was just a plug problem(needed cleaning or not inserted fully) It's a small price to pay to help keep you, your loved ones and your unit a little safer-not to mention your fellow drivers.

RE: Bees

i use a 'quick shade' (i think it is) with the screening for it. it's the smaller one but got it on sale for $39 and maybe another $20 for the screening. wanted to get the larger one but for some reason they didn't/don't make the screening for it. i can usually put it up/take down in 10-15 min. by myself and it packs up nice in it's own cases. when all together and staked down it'll take alot more breeze than my awning ever would. it'll take a picnic table or 4-6 chairs confortablely with room left over (beleive it's 10x10)

RE: Dent on Travel Trailer Frame

if there is no evident scratch or chip in the paint, i wouldn't worry about it. i work with a lot of structual and it either came in that way or happened in the shop. alot of ppl would be amazed what some of this stuff looks like and what it measures out at-lotta mill tolerence allowed with structual.

RE: Where to purchase Fuel for Weber 220?

just a thought i did the math and it comes out to 13 1lb cylenders or 1 20 lb'er. i figured with the 20 lb tank i come out ahead and since with the cost of everything we do a lot more cooking campsite rather than going out to the local restraunts. i got the newer tank with the built in reserve(says it will run an added 60 min) and i do keep a few of the 1 pounders with me just in case. aditional added feature-i chain the grill(coleman roadtrip)/tank together(sometimes with the picnic table, depends)-it won't stop anyone but trying to move either one by itself is not the easiest-together, forget it :)

RE: 35' to 40' TT's?

my 32' (35'6 over all-56'10 combined) goes all over with me. usually week ends at 1 of 3 local st parks that i know where i'll fit but vacations are anywhere and so far no problem. usually stay at private(full hook up) CG's for vacation but i do let em know my size when booking and in 3 trips(once at a COE CG) i've not been turned away or had problems getting into a site. biggest problem i have run into are utility poles and trees to get the 2 slides out on 1 side and being able to get the awning out on the other. just have to be a little more presciese on where/how ya park it.

RE: Un-Level Sites

i've seen bad b4 but that one takes the cake. on unlevel sites like that, 2 doors helps. usually one is close to ground level. glad you worked around it.

RE: Fluctuating Thermostat

yes-the digital would make a difference. just swapped mine out this yr and noticed a great improvement on both heat and air. do a search for hunter t-stat-easy mod. no more freeze/sweat cycles.

RE: Chevy 1500TV?

you can try looking at the towing guide on the home page of trailer life. only goes down to '99 and for the 1500 it ranges from 4000 to 8200 depending on engine/rear end/2 or 4 wheel drv. your friend will still need a brake controller if he doesn't have one. personally i don't think i'd tow it with out a weight dist. hitch with at least a friction bar sway control. you could go low end on these things (or used), that would depend on what you plan to do with it once you get it home. will it stay put or are you planning to travel with it. if traveling you might as well spend the $$ now and get a decient setup. also alot will depend on how experenced your friend is with towing. if you just bought this (used i'm assumeing) did anything come with the TT? hitch head(thing with the ball on it) 2 steel bars app. 3 ft long-anything?

RE: How to install Digital Thermostat?

i did the hunter install and added the extra fan switch. in reality i probably didn't have to though. it works with the AC and manual fan only and don't think i have ever used it on low except to check my install. if you really feel the need for one, check out the hunter install and you'll probably be able to figure it out from there

RE: Plug in on vehicle

Double check that ALL of your tow vehicle's fuses are in place. Many times tow vehicles will have separate fuses for trailers, and those trailer fuses may not come installed from the factory. chevys are good for this. i found out about this practice when i dropped the TT off at the dealer and the ele jack wouldn't work-even while hooked to the TV. found and fixed this befor picking up the TT and jack worked fine. on mine w/tow pkg they put in a 'dummy' 40 amp fuse-just replace with a real one and works fine. on the flip side, if you leave the TV/TT hooked together for any length of time you run the possibility of draining both battries. even though my last 2 TV said they had a circuit built in to keep the TV batt from draining below a certain level-take it from me-i don't work. found this out a few weeks ago with present TV while on vacation. left back up cam monitor on for several days and when i went to move it-nadda. luckily i had packed the charger for some reason and it did come in handy.

RE: Gas vs Electric water heater

depending on how fast i need hot water i'll run both if i need it fast and just ele if i don't. very rarely use the gas and have yet to run out of hot water and that's with both of us taking showers 1 after the other.
